Getting out the vote!

Hello eSnippers!

Webware100_160x145

I’m proud to inform you that for the first time, eSnips has been nominated to win a Webware100 Award – given out by CNET with the goal of determining the “best Web 2.0 services.”  eSnips was nominated in the Community category.

As in everything 2.0, it’s you, the users, who get to determine what the best sites are, not the editors. And it’s up to us to ask you, our terrifically supportive users, to click over to the CNET site and vote!

I know from comments and forum discussions, and even by meeting some of you personally, that many of you love eSnips and I’ve gotten lots of positive feedback in recent months. So, if you feel good about eSnips, please take a few seconds to vote.

Thanks!!!

New and improved eSnips search

For about a month now, we’ve been tweaking our search to make finding stuff easier and your results more relevant.  I’d like to share a few pointers of how to use the various search options:

apple

search results will include files and folders that use the ‘apple’ tag, or have the word ‘apple’ in its name or description.  This is the search version we had before all the recent tweaks.

tags:apple

search only for files or folders that use the tag ‘apple’

name:apple

the term ‘apple’ is included in the file or folder’s name

+apple

the term ‘apple’ must appear in all results

-apple

the term ‘apple’ must not appear in the results

“bad apple”

the phrase ‘bad apple’ must appear in the results

apple*

‘apple’ can appear as all or part of a word, such as applesauce, as well as apple

In the example below, ‘apple’ appears in the file name, the description and as one of the tags describing the picture.

Searchapple2

Also, we’ve kept the ability to sort results by Relevancy or Recency.  You can also choose to search only one content type: all files types, folders only, images, video, audio or stuff for sale.

The best community you’ve never visited…

I’ve always loved putting photo albums together.  Back in the days when I actually had free time, I would cut up anything I could get my hands on to glue in albums: maps, brochures, stickers, tickets, and ribbons.

Now it’s much easier. Scrapbooking kits provide graphic elements such frames, backgrounds and banners for every kind of event. And wouldn’t you know it, eSnips already has some ‘scrappers sharing their creations… check out Kathy Neff and Holly Ann for some great kits.

To gather all of the scrapbooking sharing activities in one place, we opened a Scrapbooking Community.

Yes, I know there are not that many of you on eSnips yet, but I really hope, for purely selfish reasons, that this community will grow and thrive!

Spoofing eSnips

I’ve recently started seeing emails that have an eSnips-looking address in the “from” line (like info@esnips.com) but have absolutely nothing to do with any of us here at eSnips.  The messages usually focus on a supposed suspension, password change or some other invented security problem.  These emails also have a suspicious attachment, a zip file which I haven’t even tried unzipping but which I am sure is not going to help my computer any.  See below for an email I received a while ago.

Anyway, as a result, we’ve changed the way that emails are displayed on your profile page so that spoofers and spammers will have a harder time automatically combing eSnips for addresses.  From now, instead of displaying the address as yourname@esnips.com we display yourname at esnips.com.  Every human should be able to read that, but we hope the machines won’t.

Of course, these spoofing emails shouldn’t be confused with the real deal.  Our service@esnips.com email address sends you a notification email whenever someone adds a file or comment to your folders.

Planned short downtime: May 9th

Our ISP is doing some maintenance work between 3 and 6 AM this Wednesday, May 9th.  During this period, eSnips will be inaccessible for not more than thirty minutes overall.  Hopefully, many of you will just sleep through it!

In any case, I apologize in advance if any of you are not able to get your dose of eSnips when you need it J
